Charlie ByrdBarney KesselHerb Ellis - Great Guitars album
Charlie Byrd was teamed up with Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis (along with bassist Joe Byrd and drummer John Rae) for this rather exciting concert. While Ellis and Kessel have three unaccompanied duets, the inclusion of Byrd (thought of as a Brazilian specialist rather than a bopper) is the wild card that makes this set a major success. While Byrd is excellent on his features "Charlie's Blues" and "O Barquinho," it is the three stomps featuring all the guitarists ("Undecided," "Topsy" and "Benny's Bugle") that are most memorable.

The second Great Guitars album features guitarists Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, and Herb Ellis matching wits and generally inspiring each other throughout this studio set. The trio, along with bassist Joe Byrd and drummer Wayne Philips, are heard together on four numbers (best are "Undecided" and Ellis' "H & B Guitar Boogie"; Ellis and Kessel duet on "Down Home Blues"; Byrd has two features to himself; and a medley combines together short versions of "Benny's Bugle & and "Latin Groove" with the typically exuberant "Charlie&apo.
Album's title: Great Guitars. Great Guitars - Great Guitars MP3 version. Bought it for my husband. Won't be getting sounds any greater than the combo of these three great guitarists. I recommend this album to any of us "old guys" that still remember the great musicians.
The trio released its self-titled debut album in 1974, followed by Return of the Great Guitars with Mundell Lowe replacing the retired Kessel. The original trio also released two other live LPs, which are now together on this two-CD set: At the Winery (1980) and At Charlie’s Georgetown (1983). The group dances through covers of classics like Air Mail Special, Sheik of Araby, When the Saints Go Marching In, and more, blending Byrd’s latin-tinged classical guitar with Kessel’s Charlie s and Ellis’ bebop licks.
