The 50th anniversary celebration of the White Album has many revelations, but perhaps its greatest achievement is dispelling the myth that the work was born out of pain and unhappiness. Exorcizing the malaise is just as important as the technical remasters when it comes to appreciating this music afresh. The story of the White Album really begins on the banks of the Ganges in February 1968. The remainder of the book contains lyrics, handwritten in McCartney’s own scrawl, in various states of completion. Some are White Album tracks like Rocky Raccoon, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Mother Nature’s Son, and Back in the USSR. Others, like Junk and a fragmented Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, finished up on other albums.
The 1968 double album has been substantially expanded with 27 early acoustic demos and 50 session takes, most of which are previously unreleased in any form. The set’s six CDs and Blu-ray disc are housed in a slipsleeved 164-page hardbound book, with pull-out reproductions of the original album’s four glossy color portrait photographs of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, as well as the album’s large fold-out poster with a photo collage on one side and lyrics on the other. The Beatles’ newly adopted method of recording all through the night was time-consuming and exhausting for their producer, George Martin.
A 50th-anniversary reissue of the 1968 White Album by The Beatles has been confirmed by Paul McCartney after months of speculation. The double album, which is actually eponymously titled although widely referred to for its plain white cover designed by artist Richard Hamilton, was made after about 30 rough demos had been recorded at lead guitarist George’s Harrison’s suburban home in Esher, near London, in May, 1968.

And do not fear for the original album: Giles’ remix adds depth and detail without betraying the ’68 balance as in the new, striking contrast between the doldrums and tumult in Harrison’s Long, Long, Long.
