David Ruffin - At His Best album
David Ruffin is the self-titled album from singer David Ruffin. This album in many ways was a collaborative effort with Bobby Miller, who produced the album. Miller also had a hand in composing eight of its tracks.

The album as a whole is one of those you can play over and over again, especially the back-half of the album, which sounds like the classic B-sides back side that’s stripped down (and, therefore, cheaper to produce). More Ruffin, less engineering. It peaked on the Billboard charts at 31. It did top the Billboard R&B Albums charts. I dunno if it’s the gospel choir in the background or what, but it’s always seemed that David Ruffin was at his best when you asked him to put his pain to tape. The deeper he goes, the brighter he shines. This is one of those sit back and let Ruffin let it out. Just some drums, bass, some sitar-electric a-saw-and-fiddle type sound that doesn’t get in the way (sounds like it’s string popping and a wa-wa), the choir, and David Ruffin.
All of David's chart hits for Motown, plus his most-requested B-sides, album cuts and an unreleased song! Includes My Whole World Ended (the Moment You Left Me); Walk Away from Love; Heavy Love; I've Lost Everything I've Ever Loved; I'm So Glad I Fell for You; Everything's Coming Up Love, and more. To me David Ruffin is one of the all-time great Rhythm & Blues vocalists and this compilation includes all of his very best after leaving the Temptations. It's a pity that his solo music doesn't get any airplay but this fabulous CD makes for a near concert experience.
At His Best (Motown, 1991). Biography of David Ruffin. David Ruffin, a native of Whynot, Mississippi, made his musical reputation as the lead singer for the pop group The Temptations with such hits during the 1960’s as My Girl, Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, Beauty Is Only Skin Deep, and I Wish It Would Rain. The Temptations scored major hits in 1967 and 1968 with Ruffin leading the way, propelling him toward a solo career with Motown records throughout most of the 1970’s. During the 1980’s, Ruffin teamed up with former Temptations Eddie Kendricks and Dennis Edwards. Ruffin and Kendricks performed with Hall & Oates at the renovated Apollo Theatre in Harlem, then at the Live Aid concert for African famine victims and on the anti-apartheid record Sun City.

Album/track producers and arrangers were not listed on the LP jacket. Songs for the album were recorded in Detroit, at Hitsville (Studio A) with horns and strings overdubbed at Golden World (Studio B), from July 1968 throught the first week of April 1969. Everlasting Love was first tracked for the Four Tops in early February 1968; they did not record vocals and the tune was re-assigned to Ruffin and overdubbed by him in March 1969.
