Complete your The Beatles collection. I received this EP as part of a radio call-in prize, and at the time it was the first extended play bit of vinyl that I’d ever owned. I thought it was sheer magic, hit singles, and while it wasn’t a proper album, the package did have that feel, and it didn’t require me to flip the record over after each song.

Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’, we take a look back to its recording sessions, during which history was made and the psychedelic rock hits ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Penny Lane’ were created. Originally intended for inclusion on the album, The Beatles instead decided to release the hits as a double a-side single in February 1967. The songs are a collection of the Fab Four’s childhood memories and a nostalgic look back to their past, growing up in their hometown of Liverpool. Following the creation of these Lennon-McCartney hits came the UK release of perhaps their finest single of all, the double a-side ‘Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane’ on 17th February 1967. It climbed to number 2 on the UK charts, breaking the band's four-year run of chart-topping singles, and spent 11 weeks there.

Strawberry Fields Forever was originally intended to appear on the band’s seminal Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, but was instead released the same year (1967) as a double-A side with Paul McCartney’s Penny Lane. George Martin has publicly stated that taking both Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever off of Sgt. Pepper’s was the biggest mistake of his career. Both songs are named after sites in Liverpool and are steeped in childhood and English nostalgia.

Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever entered the charts on 23 February 1967, and climbed to number two. It was held off by Engelbert Humperdinck’s Release Me, and spent 11 weeks on the charts  . PMc: So another question we quite often see is, in hindsight, do you wish ‘Penny Lane’ and ‘Strawberry Fields’ had been included on the album? And if so, where would you have placed them? PM: No, I was happy. It was held off by Engelbert Humperdinck's Release Me, and spent 11 weeks on the charts. The failure to reach the top was because many chart compilers counted the double a-side as two individual releases; it did, in fact, outsell Release Me by nearly two to one. It was pretty bad, wasn't it, that Engelbert Humperdinck stopped Strawberry Fields Forever from getting to number one? But I don't think it was a worry. The only reason that Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane didn't go onto the new album was a feeling that if we issued a single, it shouldn't go onto an album. That was a crazy idea, and I'm afraid I was partly responsible. It's nonsense these days, but in those days it was an aspect that we'd try to give the public value for money.

In 1967, the band entered a new phase of their career - they'd done the touring, they'd been the 'Fab Four'. Now, in John's words, they were 'more into being artists'. These are images taken during the shoots for both Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever - two of their explorations into what a promotional music film might be and early signpostings for what music video as we know it today, would become.

Strawberry Fields Forever is a song sung by the Beatles in 1967. It was originally intended to be on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but was released as a single. Who said singles could not be put on an album" is a famous saying. So Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane made the cut to go on Magical Mystery Tour. It is rumoured to be a drug song. Strawberry Fields is a real place~John".

I bought a sealed copy and the first time playing it was a little disappointed. The disc was dirty with white paper in between the grooves and the quality was pretty off. The rsd box set with Elenor Rigby and ticket to ride sounds 1,000x better. Hell even the target exclusives like let it be and I am the walrus sound much better. I’d probably be a skeptical of any Beatles 7 inch reissues from parlaphone the capitol ones were much more crisp

My version with a solid center came in the standard green & white Parlophone sleeve, it is an original issue. No Picture sleeve.

I have a copy of this Brazil Pressing and can confirm there is 'a sudden cut that edits out "in summer" in the middle of the song'. Limitations with the acetate or original copy used to press this copy? Who knows. It appears that this occurs on all copies of this pressing. I guess if there were a copy of this pressing with out the 'sudden cut that edits out "in summer" in the middle of the song' then that may be an even rarer find. Until then i'm happy with my copy. Also got Hello, Goodbye Brazil Pressing as well. You can never have enough Beatles records can you?

Well I've played it it sounds so crisp clean and clear John's vocal is centered around a 180 degree stereo sound stage its subtile and sounds fresh.great great great great shame with PL that they did not replicate that superior and defining Piccolo trumpet ending that USA Capitol did for their original promo 45 and cut that avent garde stuff out remember IMO SFF is even worse strawberry jam, straw-berry- jam, number 9, number 9, number 9, it's not enjoyable its annoying drivvle. IMO naturally There is also a lovely liitle sax touch that should really end and close Lady Madonna ties it up nicely. but hey ho what do I know I'm just a fan. Sorting out PL would have been great and really meant it had been remixed, Number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9.

This a very stupid idea. Likewise, that James Bond sting isn't performed by The Beatles, so it's a useless addition.

The lister used the wrong terminology the record has a replica dinked 4-pin OC (optional centre) and NO do not push this out you will devalue and or snap the plastic hence this crass terminolgy needs to go! The Centre is Optional and is an OC Optional Centre that has been dinked on a dinking machine (that Germany's Optimal pressing plant has invested in esp after the Magical Mystery tour 7" retro release with drawn on OC's and made UMG a laughing stock with Beatles collectors)They have made one very big and very stupid mistake on this retro release and it's so obvious it begger's belief and that's the printed matrix on the labels!#As this 7" is now Stereo and first time UK stereo and following the EMI in-house system and as UMG did not for some daft reason state the stereo sonics on the re-produced labels yet have made in the EEU at 6 o'c then the matix should say 7YCE and not 7XCE the "Y" confirms a stereo master the "X" a mono master.Clearly the compilers at UMG do not know their facts and these important and correct touches!sack them! But there you have the reason EMI in bold EVERY MISTAKE IMAGINABLEIf it's stereo remixed or what its YCE if it's still mono also remixed or what it's XCE how simple is that Y = Stereo X = Mono over at EMI at Decca it was XDR for Mono masters/mixes and ZDR for Stereo masters/mixes Z = Stereo X = Mono over at Decca( Decca group also owned licenced managed etc etc by UMG get your matrix facts right or get out of the job)Some people who get paid a lot of money do not know their XYZ! fact by trying to be too clever and falling at the final hurdle and not doing their homework). This 7" should fit nicely with 50th A. Sgt Peppers due on the 26th with new stereo mixes tooYEX or XEX wait and see!Great shame on this project and a needless gaff!

Is it recommended to push out the center or keep it in place? Just curious if it's a gimmick of sorts or if there's any sonic value to keeping/removing it. Otherwise I'll likely keep it in place to maintain collectibility.

Just in case you're not familiar a lot of old UK singles had a push out center so they could fit into Jukeboxes like Musicfreak98 mentioned or a regular turntable without the need for those yellow adapters. I don't think they use the design now except for historical accuracy like with this vinyl.
Cobandis
The only reason that I can think of for pushing out the centre would be to use it in a jukebox.

Mine is quite warped. Not enough to return it, but quite noticable. Sounds is, well, disappointing and distorted. I think there are probably better records of this still out there.
Wal
Yep mine is warped. Its very thin vinyl so probably wouln't take much to affect it. A shame but it's still cool to have.
Orll
Quite deceived by the sound of Strawberry Fields Forever, very muddy bass, too much bass on the drums... But after flipping to Penny Lane, I have to admit that the mix is simply amazing, the same treatment should have been applied to side A ! Best sound is still on the mono Lp's though !
FreandlyMan
Anyone's copy sound distorted, not much, just enough to notice. Tried with three different cartridges to see if it was on my end?
Velellan
Same here. There is a weird sort of "wind" noise during the Intro of Strawberry Fields Forever, and slight bass distortion in Penny Lane.
Eseve
I've noticed some very slight distortion at parts but my cartridge was dirty so it might have been thatEdit: Cleaned my cartridge and still hear some distortion. Mostly on SFF, not so much on Penny Lane

Had to play it. Great mix... to all those who missed out I'm sorry and hope you get one without having to pay the rediculous prices already being asked for it. Peace and Love...

Further to my original assessment.......And my copy arriving from Holland I can add the following......1. The shrink wrap was so tight it has caused and forced creases on the thumb tabs as they bend forward to the front. (going the other way from easy split tare thin paper in 1967 to ott thick card in 2017)2. The pressing finish was poor with heavy scrim around the SH which I had to use a lot of pressure on scalpel to remove (then touch up with a HQ black marker) Now the updated comments 1 A big massive plus is that black record store day sticker is very easy peel off the cling film and stays stick making cutting off the needless and vile barcode very very easy sticker with out this looks smart and professional! Re stuck on a good HQ Polyliner sleeve on the top L-C corner is smart allows storage shelving and easy to see when sleeve is faced the right way.2. Wonderful ignorant grammatical and lack of a command of English error on the content text. As the disc has 2 sides and thus 2 tracks and BOTH are new and remixed Stereo versions, the text should read " stereo remixes" not as printed "stereo remix" there are 2 remixes NOT 1 this is simple and easy to follow English (it's not French La or Le or German Der Die or Das)it's just plain ignorent and needless it's plural not in the singular (no pun intended) remixES not remix why was the not picked up before printing or was Kimberly busy texting the boyfriend about where they were going to go that night! It's outrageous and is shoddy and poor work! Sack and shoot.3. With very very HQ fine line black marker pen the right hand bottom leg of the 'X' on the matrix number can be easily obliterated and change the X into a y so it's correct.4. When filing this new remixed version instead of adding to the R prefix (for example SR or RS I found that by doing the same with the 50th A single of Love Me Do Adding A1 to the original Ringo version and A2 to the Andy White version after the catalogue number makes it simple easy clear and professional. so applied this as A2 and B2 it does the same! Just a suggestion and thought for collectors and discographers!4, Although the cutting enginner at Optimal now uses the full playing surface of a 7" record Looking back at 50th a edition of Love Me Do it was a joke (the playing area looked like a 1953 EMI 1954 Decca tight spiral microgroove pressing quiet and low bass playback) Optimal still use a hand crafted wand/etcher for the matrix master....looks so bootleg and cheap metal stamper lugs clear simple and professional also add 'mastered by Optimal' be a nice professiuonal touch amd look smart not some scribble that can't be worked out!again but unfairly EMI Every Mistake Imaginable ugh just really p*** poor crafting by UMG

So happy I got this ...This was my first record store day purchase.

Agreed, the stereo mix is beautiful. It's too bad many people didn't even buy these to listen to them, it's a great piece of vinyl

I really like both songs especially the psychedelic "Strawberry Fields Forever"The picture sleeve looks very nice.

Like The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” “Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane” didn’t so much hit hard, it was more that they seeped their way into the collective consciousness of the world, and never left.At the time of its release most people did not know the backstory, hearing the songs as psychedelic messages from the all mysterious Beatles, when in fact, most Beatle songs were deeply rooted in reality and real places, though for those of us traveling the mystic highway of fascination, we were all more than willing to listen to the rumors, even making up some of our own, and dive headlong down the rabbit hole. Of course all these years later, and with countless books having been written, exploring every nuance of the of all things Beatle, I so wish that I could return to those cherished fabricated underground memories from so long ago. Both of the songs were artistically different, lush, layered, hypnotic, yet with their dream laden musical construction and surreal lyrics, this back to back adventure made for a contextually complete image, one that made it impossible for one song to exist without the other. On first hearing the songs on the radio during the mid 60’s, I remember turning to my friend and saying with eyes wide, “That was astonishing,” shivers running up my arms. These songs were singular moments in time, they were defining points on the map of my life, and certainly were partly responsible for my lysergic manifestations, where under the influence, the numbers became even more alive, more magical, filled with divine purpose and provenance, and etched into my being. Both “Strawberry Fields and “Penny Lane” were musical scripts being played out in my head, and I’m sure that I was not the only one so affected. With both songs being recorded in late 1966, and released as a single due to pressure from their record company, neither of these tracks would find their way onto Sgt. Pepper, though it was Lennon’s intention that “Strawberry Fields” should be the opening track for Sgt. Pepper, where if one considers the sublime nature of these two numbers, they would have completely redefined that album as we know it, without a doubt making it much stronger and influential. There was an intimacy that was unfolding as these songs played out, not simply as Beatle compositions, but as an intimacy for my life, nearly stripping away all that I was, all that I thought I would be, and showed me something that to this day I can not quiet put my finger on, though this musical gesture somehow morphed my notions of self-assurance and self-doubt, where I witnessed an epiphanic moment for myself, with these songs defining my subconscious, and defining my ego [my personal identity].*** The Fun Facts: Penny Lane is where Lennon used to live before moving in with his Aunt Mimi. As such, Strawberry Fields was also a factual place, a Salvation Army home in Liverpool where John Lennon used to go. He had fond memories of the place that inspired this. In 1984, Lennon's widow Yoko Ono donated $375,000 to the home. One of the buildings has been named Lennon Hall.John's aunt Mimi did not like John going to Strawberry Fields, as it was basically an orphanage and she thought they would lead John astray. John liked going there because having lost his father and later his mother he felt a kinship to the lads. When John and his aunt would argue about his going he would often reply, "What are they going to do, hang me?" Thus the line "Nothing to get hung about." In America, to be "hung up" is to worry about something, so many US listeners thought the line meant that it was nothing to get "hung up about.”A distorted voice at the end sounds like "I buried Paul," which fueled rumors that Paul McCartney was dead. The voice is actually Lennon saying, "Cranberry sauce." It turns out Strawberry Fields is not forever. In 2005, Britain's Salvation Army closed the Strawberry Field children's home in Liverpool, stating that it's preferable for children to be raised in a foster or small group home instead of a large orphanage. The home opened in 1936.Of course there is the Vietnam War [Viet Nam in the 60’s, hence the reason for calling it The Nam] reference: With the Viet Nam War being a totally misunderstood conflict among most Americans during the 1960’s, thousands of young, especially teenagers, were drafted or enlisted to fight against the spread of communism. During 1967, around the turning point for the War, the Beatles “Strawberry Fields Forever.” which metaphorically represents strawberry fields as Vietnam, complete with lyrics such as “Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.” The Beatles metaphorically represent America’s shaded knowledge about the Viet Nam War by comparing it to a person living ‘with eyes closed’. The 1960’s was a time of misdirection for teenagers who leaving high school during the war, were out to discover their identities as adults, with The Beatles singing, “It’s getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn't matter much to me.” Since the lyrics convey a confused or lost character, but also a free spirited one, the song depicts the life of a teenage boy, who enlists to fight in Vietnam in order to find himself. Since Vietnam was until today, America’s longest lasting conflict, it was also a very bloody war for the United States, and because strawberries are red, the suffering and death of American soldiers is conveyed through the construct of ‘strawberry fields’. The Viet Nam War was also until today’s war in Iraq, the longest lasting military conflict in American history. Therefore, Strawberry Fields Forever depicts itself as a well suiting name for the Viet Nam Conflict because the war literally seemed to have lasted ‘forever’ for most Americans at the time.Review by Jenell Kesler

Good description of the difference between the hand etched star, and the machine stamped star, (they really look like an asterisk more than what one would consider a star, but the machine stamped one is tighter and obviously stamped. This "star" is the symbol of Capitol's LA pressing plant, (Hollywood stars). For some clarification, (though we can all perceive color slightly differently), the color of the label is often described as yellow/light green, as opposed to just green.Beatles.For.Sale

This mono mix of Strawberry Fields Forever has a slightly longer fade than on the standard UK & US issue; The infamous spoken "cranberry sauce", is actually said twice. The second one is almost cut off at the end of the fade in the original mono mix, but on the German single (Odeon O 23 436) just a syllable of it can be heard that is missing from known US and UK pressings. http://www.columbia.edu/~brennan/beatles/var-1966.html

Just like previous single (albeit its B-side, "Rain"), this one was also subject to discussions about backmasking. And yes, "Strawberry Fields Forever" in reverse sound very much like "A Pair Of Sleepy Red Moose"... however, this was not intended as such by the band.
