Various - The Now Sound Of Brazil 2 album
Meet the Now Sound of Brazil, quite a bit like the Then Sound of Brazil: jazzy and warm; insinuatingly soft; funky in a gently swinging sort of way; and very, very sexy. What separates the Now Sound from the Then Sound in most cases is, unsurprisingly, technology. It's an occasional waft of jungly breakbeats here and a sudden shift of equalization there, and every once in a while it's a compulsively funky fusion of swaying samba and butt-rattling hip-hop. But not on this compilation.
Brazil 2 traverses three more or less equal, colorful territories: Traditional acoustic instrument-based vocal ballads presented by Bebel Gilberto, Cibelle, and Celco Fonseca; modern, electronic-based club music by DJ Dolores and the fun-loving Bossacucanova (who sound like Brazil's answer to Canada's reigning musical pranksters, the Barenaked Ladies); plus other contemporary Brazilian sounds that sort of writhe. Compiled by Béco Dranoff and Crammed Discs founder and president Marc Hollander, the men behind Ziriguiboom, The Now Sound of Brazil is as cool as it is innovative, with contributions from labelmates Bossacucanova, Suba, Trio Mocotó, and, naturally, Gilberto and Zuco 103. Also included are new works by upcoming artists Celso Fonseca ("Bom Sinal") and Cibelle ("Dia de Yemanjá"), both of whom have full-lengths scheduled for release later this year. Standout tracks include the Peter Kruder remix of Gilberto's "Tanto Tempo," Charles Webster's re-rub of Zuco.
